Dorothy E. Filer May 18, 1921 - October 24, 2017

Dorothy E. Filer, 96, of Allentown, passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2017 in Phoebe Home Allentown. Born in Tamaqua, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Jennie (Phillips) Filer. Dorothy graduated from Kutztown State Teachers College with a B.S. in Education. She was certified to teach English, French and Library Science. She graduated from Lehigh University with a M.A. in Education and with Certification in Counseling. Miss Filer began her career at Parkland H.S. as a Teacher Librarian from 1943-1945. She then worked in the Allentown School District, first at Central J.H.S. as the Librarian (1945-1951), next at South Mountain J.H.S. as a Counselor (1951-1959), and then at Louis E. Dieruff H.S., as a Counselor and chairman of the Counseling Department (1959-1969). Dorothy then served as Director of Guidance (1969-1971) and Director of Pupil Services (1971-1982) for the Allentown S.D. She was involved with several professional state organizations in education. She served as a board member and past president of Family and Children’s Service, Allentown and was on the board of Mental Health/Mental Retardation of Lehigh County. Dorothy was a volunteer with Meals-on-Wheels and the Allentown Art Museum. She was a member of St. John’s UCC, Allentown, where she was a member of Consistory. She was a past president of Quota Club of Allentown. Miss Filer received a citation as a Distinguished Alumnus at Kutztown State College. She was also honored by Kappa Delta Pi at Kutztown as a member of the International Honor Society in Education. Dorothy was active for many years and was a past president of the Delta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an International Honor Society for Women Educators. Dotta traveled extensively, visiting locations on five continents.

Survivors: Niece: Megan Wieand and her husband Donald E. Wieand, Jr. of Fogelsville; Great niece: Elizabeth Wieand; Great nephew: Donald E. Wieand, III. Dorothy was predeceased by sisters Marion Filer and Mildred Filer Williams and by her brother Robert T. Filer.
