Gale Claire (Hughes) James December 5, 1939 - February 27, 2021
Gale Claire (Hughes) James, 81, of Allentown, died peacefully February 27, 2021 at Lehigh Valley Hospital. Gale was born December 5, 1939 in Kingston, PA, the only child of Albert H. and Charlotte G. (Jacobson) Hughes. She graduated near the top of her class at Kingston High School and passed up many scholarship offers to follow her high school sweetheart to Wilkes College, now Wilkes University. Wilkes gave her a degree with honors in Elementary Education in May 1961 and Maurice D. (Morey) James gave her a wedding ring in June. The newlyweds moved to Pittsburgh, PA, where Gale taught second grade, then to Charleston, WV, then back to Pittsburgh. In 1972, the couple settled in Allentown with their two children, the late Maurice D. (David) James, Jr. and Lisa M. (James) Thomas.
Gale was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, where she and Morey worshipped for 35 years. Recently, she served as the leader of the Prayer Chain Gang, previously as president of the Women of Redeemer, and always as an excellent communicator. For years, Gale traveled and spoke on anti-racism, and served a term as President of the NE Pennsylvania Synod Women.
Although Gale gave up teaching when she became a mother, she was a lifelong educator – leading bible studies, hosting sewing classes, encouraging women, and inspiring her grandchildren. A seamstress, cook, gardener and spotless homemaker, Gale knew the best practice for absolutely everything and was happy to share her experience. She was a wonderful caregiver and the definition of unconditional love. She was also a small business owner and boss lady, running Ashley’s Florist and Greenhouse, which she and Morey owned for a number of years as an extension of their love of gardening.
Gale is remembered for her poise, her penmanship and her positive outlook. She is loved and missed by daughter Lisa (James) and husband C. Jeffrey Thomas; grandchildren Maurice D. James III, John H. Thomas, Katherine C. Thomas, and E. Ralsten Thomas; and her loving canine sidekick, Pixie, who now resides with Lisa and Jeff. The burial will be private, but the family hopes for a memorial service in the months to come. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 802 N. 19th St, Allentown, PA 18104. Arrangements by Stephens Funeral Home, Inc. www.stephensfuneral.com
