Gerald Wallis Boyer September 26, 1931 - May 2, 2022

September 26, 1931 (Baltimore, MD) – May 2, 2022 (Allentown, PA)

Gerald (“Jere”) Boyer, 90, has fallen asleep in the Lord and now rests in the arms of the One who is peace. He has joined the heavenly host and wakes to joy in His Lord and Savior, Whom he loved and served all his life.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, to the Rev. Ralph E. Boyer and Anna Hatton Boyer, Gerald was the fifth of six children in a family at whose very center was the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ through word and music.  From his youth a gifted musician, Gerald won many vocal competitions and acceptance into the Peabody Conservatory.  In answer to a sermon call delivered by a young traveling evangelist whom his father had invited to preach at his home parish in York, PA, Gerald chose instead a different path.  The theme of that sermon was the question posed by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, “What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, but lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36).  The young preacher was a man named Billy Graham.

Touched by the flame of evangelism, the young Gerald knew from there that he would offer his life and his talents for God and for His people.  Upon completing his studies in music at a Christian college (Northwestern, MN), he joined his eldest brother Eugene as a missionary in France.  Known affectionately as Les Frères Boyer, the Boyer brothers held evangelization campaigns throughout France and Switzerland during the 1950’s and 1960’s and produced the radio program, “La Voix de l’Evangile,” which brought the Gospel to countless people in the French speaking lands.

While on missionary furlough in 1959, Gerald met his future wife, Eleanor (“Ele”), at her home parish in NJ where she served as his piano accompanist.  Married in 1965, Jere and Ele would share five decades of faithful Church ministry together, both in the States and back in France, where Jere returned in 1976 with his growing family as a missionary and faculty member of the Reformed Theological Seminary of Aix-en-Provence, tasked with developing a department of doxological music.  In addition to forming seminarians for active parish worship, Jere and Ele developed a large seminary choir which regularly toured churches and cathedrals throughout France and Switzerland in evangelistic outreach.  In the US, Gerald served as Worship Pastor of the York Gospel Center (York, PA), Calvary Evangelical Fee Church (Essex Fells, NJ), and Faith Church (Allentown, PA).

Gerald is remembered by family, friends, and colleagues as a man whose profound faith in Jesus Christ shaped every facet of his life. Kind and humble, he had the devoted heart of a servant and a joyful, tenacious spirit. Immensely gifted as a musician, he remained modest in character. Generous and charismatic, he inspired all who knew him to “lift up their voices” in praise and thanksgiving to God and for the healing of His creation.

Gerald is survived by his beloved wife Eleanor (Landaas), children Maurice (Lori), Michelle Bosi (Benoit), Karsten, and Karine Henseler (Joe), grandchildren Wyatt, Cedric, Shepard, Louis, Cooper, and Amelie, sister Betty Pinkernell (William), brothers Eugene (Monique) and David (June). He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph E. and Anna (Hatton) Boyer, his brother Daniel (Evon), and sister Nancy Fenstermacher.
