Gilbert L. Mowery, Jr. March 20, 1943 - November 22, 2023
It is with sadness that our family shares the news that Gilbert L. Mowery, Jr., 80, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2023, in Bainbridge OH. He is survived by loving wife of 57 years, Peggy, two daughters, Allison Witalec (Joe) and Cynthia Flanigan (Tim), and four grandchildren, Josh, Matt, Connor, and Megan. Gil was born and raised in Orange OH with his late parents, brother, Geoff, and sister, Annette. He pursued his dream to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) for his bachelor’s degree. In Cambridge MA, he participated in M.I.T.’s glee club and met many life-long friends including an introduction to Peggy at a dance hosted with other local colleges. After completing college and getting married, they moved to Pittsburgh PA where he continued his studies in electrical engineering and received his Ph. D. from Carnegie Mellon University. Gil and Peggy established their family life in Allentown PA where they met many wonderful friends who have continued to be a significant part of their lives. They spent many weekends and holidays at the Ocean City MD beach where they enjoyed the surf and wildlife. Gil’s professional career originally focused on developing integrated circuits at AT&T Bell Labs but later moved into management positions within the company. He had a full career with the company and was honored for his inventions and proud of his mentorship of younger women and men in the field and of overseeing technical developments across several sites. He was very passionate about learning throughout life with particular interest in science, technology, automobiles, computers, nature, and medical breakthroughs. He loved photography and spending his weekends boating with family and friends, target shooting, building and flying radio-controlled airplanes, and hiking in the Poconos and Lehigh Valley areas. Gil had an amazing musical talent; without being able to read piano music, he taught himself to play the piano and could play any song he heard on the radio. He loved to sing, play the guitar and appreciated listening to the music around him, especially Dave Brubeck’s Band, Kingston Trio and Beach Boys. Gil was a fiercely loyal friend, amazing father, supportive husband, and gifted with so many talents. He was unassuming and always had a positive comment making others feel that they could do anything. Rest in peace, Gil; your family and friends will never forget you and will love you always. Services: 11 AM Saturday, December 16, 2023, at STEPHENS FUNERAL HOME, INC. 274 N. Krocks Rd. Allentown. Call 10:30 AM until service. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Memorial Park, Allentown.
