John S. Maxwell September 18, 1955 - October 12, 2024

John S. Maxwell of Coopersburg, PA passed away peacefully at Lehigh Valley Health/Cedar Crest on Saturday, October 12, 2024.
John was an auto mechanic and conducted operations at John’s Auto Service in Coopersburg, having learned his trade in high school under the tutelage of “Dutch” Kern. Dutch taught him a great deal about auto mechanics, particularly about restoring antique cars such as Franklins.
John’s motto was “repair rather than buy new”, a somewhat unique approach in today’s throw away/replace society. Most of the cars he owned were manufactured before 2000, and he was constantly tinkering with them and had them running.
His mechanical abilities extended beyond the automotive world. He bought old lawn mowers, snow blowers, weed whackers, etc., repaired them and kept the old boiler system in his house up and running.
John’s shop was like a Cheers bar in the mornings when friends would gather to chat, exchange ideas, listen to John’s extensive knowledge of history and trains. Some of those at the morning meetings have since passed on, while others are left to mourn his passing.
John loved maintaining the house he grew up in almost as much as he loved working on cars and sharing his knowledge with others.
John is survived by brother, Scott Maxwell and his wife Dawn of Indialantic, FL; sister, Anne L. Maxwell of Port Republic, NJ; niece, Heather; nephew Brian and many close friends.
There will be no services. In lieu of flowers or other offerings, please honor John’s memory by making sure to get your oil changed regularly and check your tire pressure. Arrangements by Stephens Funeral Home, Inc. Please visit www.stephensfuneral.com to leave your remembrances.
