Margaret C. “Peggy” (McGowan) Solly April 5, 1927 - May 4, 2018

Margaret C. “Peggy” Solly, 91, of Allentown, passed away Friday, May 4, 2018 in Abington Manor, Easton. Born in Ridley Park, Delaware Co., she was a daughter of the late James and Catherine (McHugh) McGowan. Peggy lived in Chester then moved to Norwood and graduated from Glen-Nor High School. After graduation she worked for Westinghouse in Essington. In 1955 Peggy started to work at Sinclair Refinery Company in Marcus Hook and married Joseph B. Solly on Friday, January 13, 1956. She retired from Sinclair in the latter part of November 1957 and had her first child in July 1958. Subsequently she had two more children (a girl and a boy). Once the kids were all in school, Peggy started working full-time at Precision Roll Grinders as a bookkeeper. Prior to working full-time, she worked part-time from home for Precision. Mrs. Solly retired in 1988. The Solly’s lived in Ridley Park after marriage until moving to Broomall, Delaware County in 1960. They were then transferred to Raleigh, NC in 1966 and lived there until being transferred to Allentown in 1969. Peggy resided in Allentown until moving to Country Meadows, Allentown in 2015. Mrs. Solly was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Orefield. She was a long-time volunteer with the L.V. Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and worked in the Tree Top gift shop. Peggy was a Penn State football fan, loved gardening, birds and visiting Maine. Her pride and joy were her family.

Survivors: Husband Joe; Children: Thomas J. Solly of Allentown, Joanne S. Kelly and her husband Brian of Bethlehem, Carl W. Solly and his wife Claire of Hilton Head, SC; Grandchildren: Kathryn E. Roth, Megan L. Roth, Erica M. Roth, Joseph A. Solly, E. Reed Solly, Matthew J. Kelly, Nathan R. Kelly. Peggy was predeceased by sisters Doris, Tooky and Mary and by a brother Jimmy.

Services: 11 am Tuesday, Funeral Mass at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 1879 Applewood Drive, Orefield, PA 18069. Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 7:30 pm Monday and 9 – 10 am Tuesday in the Stephens Funeral Home, Inc., 274 N. Krocks Rd., Allentown 18106. www.stephensfuneral.com
