Merritt Curtis Schmoyer December 29, 1921 - May 16, 2024

Merritt Curtis Schmoyer passed away peacefully at the Buffalo Valley Nursing Home, Lewisburg, PA on Thursday May 16. He was born on December 29, 1921 to the parents of Charles and Sarah Schmoyer in Allentown, PA. The family moved to Wescosville, PA where he met and married Marie Yeager Schmoyer on Easter morning before the worship service in 1942. Their son, Eddie passed away as an infant in 1951 as well as his wife, Marie, in 1986. Surviving is a daughter Mary, in Selinsgrove; a son Bob, and his wife Lynn in Kreamer; and a son Tom, in Macungie, PA. Also surviving are two grandsons, Duane and his wife Amy, in Kreamer; and Brian in Frederick, MD. In addition, surviving are three great-grandchildren Nicholas and his fiancé Gabby; Logan and his wife Jordan; and Mackenzie; and a great-great granddaughter who will be arriving in September.

Merritt served in World War II initially in “Patton’s Army” and later received training at the Virginia Military Institute. After his discharge from military service, he attended Lehigh University earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering. He then went to work for Western Electric Company in Allentown as an Engineer and for Bethlehem Steel Company as a General Foreman, retiring from the latter in 1981.

Merritt was actively involved in the church serving in several leadership roles over the years. He enjoyed reading (read 4,450 books), exercising (walking even when he needed a walker), completing crossword puzzles, and fishing with his son, Bob. He took pride in being first or second at the voting booth on election day. He was known as a generous, kind, and mild-mannered man.

Merritt was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Middleburg.

A celebration of Merritt’s life will be held at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday, May 28th at the Stephens Funeral Home, Inc. 274 North Krocks Road, Allentown. Friends and family may call from 12:30 – 1:30 P.M. Tuesday in the funeral home. The officiant for the service will be Lynn Schmoyer.  Interment with military honors will be in the Cedar Church Cemetery, Allentown. www.stephensfuneral.com.
