Russell L. Kernechel November 21, 1929 - September 30, 2018

Russell L. Kernechel, 88, formerly of Allentown and Macungie, passed away Sunday, September 30, 2018 in Treyburn Rehabilitation Center, Durham, NC. He was the husband of the late Nancy K. (Newhard) Kernechel and Patricia (Buss) Kernechel. Born in Quakertown, he was a son of the late William and Sara (Schaffer) Kernechel. Russell was a carpenter and worked for Dries Building Supply for 25 years before retiring in 1992. He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and was the recipient of a Purple Heart, Korean Campaign Medal and three Bronze Stars. Mr. Kernechel was a member of VFW Post #9264, Macungie, Topton Legion Post #217, Greenleaf Lodge #561 F.&A.M., Allentown, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Bethlehem Forest #61 and was a former scout master of Troop 11 for 15 years. He was a member of the former St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, Allentown. Upon his move to NC in 2015, he joined Plainview Baptist Church, Durham.

Survivors: Daughter: Debra K. Pond and her husband Rev. Dr. Darrell Pond of Durham, NC; Son: Gregory A. and wife Michele of Whitehall; 2 Grandchildren: David Lewis (wife Sarah) and Jackie Kernechel, 4 Great grandchildren: Cameron, Austin, Hailey and Evelyn; Brothers: Walter of Kintnersville, Richard of Bellmont, TX, Chester of Telford; Sister: Ruth Wied of Quakertown. Russell was predeceased by sisters Kathryn Bossard, Dorothy Packer, and Grace Kistler and brother Harold.

Services: 10:15 am Saturday, Stephens Funeral Home, Inc., 274 N. Krocks Rd., Allentown. Call 9 – 10 am Saturday followed by a Masonic Service at 10 am, all in the funeral home. www.stephensfuneral.com. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Allentown with military honors.
